Profile

Prof. Faccio obtained his Chemical Engineering degree in 2003 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2007 at Universidad de la República, Uruguay. He has also performed complementary studies at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (Italy), Argonne National Laboratory (USA) and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). He is Full Professor of Physics (full time) at Facultad de Química, Universidad de la República, and Head of the Department DETEMA since December 2021. He is Honorary Researcher of the Basic Sciences Development Program (Grade 5, PEDECIBA) and Active Researcher of the National Research System (Level III, SNI-ANII), both the highest level in Uruguay. His research is in Materials Science and Nanotechnology with a hybrid theoretical-experimental approach: electronic structure of carbon nanomaterials (defects and dopants in graphene, nanoribbons, nanotubes), molecular electronics, nanostructured titanates and oxides for energy conversion and storage (dye-sensitized solar cells, Li- and Na-ion batteries, electrolyzers), 2D materials and MXenes, and confocal Raman microscopy applied to materials, pharmaceutical and biological systems. He led the acquisition of the first dual confocal Raman-AFM microscope and of a powder X-ray diffractometer in Uruguay, both open to the national research community.

Research

Materials Science and Nanotechnology with a combined theoretical-experimental approach, along two main lines.

Line 1

Design, preparation and characterization of materials for energy generation and storage

Materials and hybrid inorganic-polymer nanostructures are prepared and characterized for energy conversion (solar cells, electrolyzers, catalysts for hydrogen production) and storage (Li- and Na-ion batteries). Characterization combines X-ray diffraction, confocal Raman microscopy, AFM and impedance spectroscopy, supported by computational simulation.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC)
  • Li- and Na-ion batteries: solid polymer electrolytes, cathode and anode materials
  • Alkaline and PEM electrolyzers for hydrogen production; fuel cells
  • Catalysts for reforming and hydrogen production; photocatalysis
  • MXenes and 2D materials for energy

Line 2

Simulation of the electronic properties of nanomaterials

First-principles methods are applied to low-dimensional systems (quantum dots, nanowires, surfaces and two-dimensional materials): carbon nanostructures, transition-metal oxides, dichalcogenides and MXenes. Electronic structure, magnetism and electronic and thermal transport are analyzed; recent work incorporates ab initio molecular dynamics and machine-learning force fields.

  • Graphene and carbon nanostructures: defects, doping, magnetism, transport, quantum dots
  • Transition-metal dichalcogenides, topological materials and 2D MXenes
  • High-Tc superconductors (YBCO, BSCCO, LSCO) under strain
  • Metal oxides and nanostructured titanates; coordination polymers and MOFs
  • Ab initio molecular dynamics and machine-learning force fields
